Sedation Dentistry

If you have a fear of the dentist, you’re not alone. As your trusted dental care partner, we are well aware of how frightening the thought of the dentist’s chair can be. With that in mind, we’ve created a physically and mentally comfortable environment at Dental Arts & Wellness.

We offer a number of sedation options to calm and relax you before and during each appointment. Our providers always use a gentle touch and refined dentistry techniques; however, we know that offering a wide range of sedation services increases the treatment’s benefits and your comfort.

Everyone fears something. For a lot of people, it is heights, closed-in spaces, clowns, or the dark. And for a good many people, it’s the dentist. Most people know that they have no reason to fear the dentist – after all, the dentist is there to help you – but this does not always help to ease their fears. The needle, the drill, and even just the thought of someone putting their hands in your mouth can be enough to cause you to forego the dental care that you need.

Sometimes, seeing a dentist with small hands can help. You will also find that she has a gentle manner and will do everything she can to put your mind at ease. If you are still apprehensive, though, sedation dentistry will help.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Much of the time, people think that sedation dentistry means that you will be asleep during treatment. Most of the time, this is not the case, although at Dental Arts and Wellness in Lake Oswego, OR, we do have a dental anesthesiologist on staff, and complex dental procedures can be done under a general anesthetic.

Usually, all that is needed, even for stressful and time-consuming procedures like multiple extractions, is conscious sedation. You will be awake during the treatment, and able to communicate with Dr. Yamaguchi, but you will be very relaxed.

How It Works

Another misconception when it comes to sedation dentistry is regarding the use of nitrous oxide. Most people know it by its more familiar name, “laughing gas.” If you are under the impression that you will giggle your way through your treatment, let us put that notion to rest. You will not be laughing, or even amused; you will simply be calm and unafraid. You will not be troubled by the approach of the needle or the sound of the drill.

We also offer oral sedation, which is a pill that you take before you have your dental work done. Again, you will be aware of what is going on, but in Dr. Yamaguchi’s capable hands, you will feel fully relaxed.

Why Us?

Sometimes, Dr. Yamaguchi works on elderly patients whose adult children have brought them to her. Dr. Yamaguchi can communicate with them, and fully explain how sedation dentistry can help them feel even more relaxed and accepting of treatment.
