Am I a Candidate for Dentures?

Missing teeth can be replaced in a number of ways: by means of dental implants, dental bridges, and dentures. You might think that dentures are not a good option, but that is likely due to a number of misconceptions about them. For instance, you might think that dentures will slip and slide in our mouth. However, that is your grandparents’ dentures, not yours.

Modern dentures can be so well-fitted that the chances of them slipping are highly unlikely. So if you have missing teeth, and you are wondering how to replace them, chances are that you could be a very good candidate for dentures.

What Kinds of Dentures are Available?

There are dentures for virtually every type of tooth loss. If you have lost only a few teeth, and the rest of your teeth are in good shape, you might consider a partial denture. On the other hand, if most of your teeth are missing, you might require full dentures. Anyone, though, who is missing teeth, can be a candidate for dentures of one type or another.

How Do I Care for My Dentures?

Some people like to leave their dentures in overnight, especially if they are sharing their bed with someone else. You can certainly do that, but if you do, you should make every effort to take your dentures out and clean them in the morning.

You should always use an approved cleaner for dentures – never toothpaste, which can dull your dentures.

How Long Will My Dentures Last?

It is an unfortunate fact that hardly anything lasts forever, and this is true of dentures. Dentures can be damaged if dropped, and may need to be replaced if the damage is extensive. The main reason, though, that you would need to have your dentures replaced would be due to changes in your mouth that are a natural consequence of aging. For this reason, dentures usually need to be replaced about every 20 years.
