At Dental Arts and Wellness, we offer not just general, cosmetic and restorative dental treatments, but also specialized treatments. We give you the extras that you expect and deserve as part of our commitment to delivering the very best dental treatments and technologies. We are constantly researching and acquiring new technology in order to ensure that your visit to our Lake Oswego dentist office is as pleasant and stress-free as possible. Your comfort and good oral health are always our main priority.
You can always plan for regular checkups, cleanings, and appointments to have dental treatments done. Sometimes, though, the unexpected can happen, and you have a dental emergency. Dental emergencies would constitute things like a blow to the mouth resulting in missing teeth, a sudden and severe swelling in your jaw or face, or a tooth that has broken and is causing pain. A lost filling is not considered to be a dental emergency, nor is a toothache (unless accompanied by swelling) or breakage that is not causing pain.
At Dental Arts and Wellness, Dr. Yamaguchi will see registered patients on the same day, and if necessary, even after hours for dental issues that simply have to be dealt with right away. Non-registered patients who have dental emergencies will receive the second level of priority, with Dr. Yamaguchi seeing them during regular business hours at her earliest convenience.
You might be surprised at how many people grind their teeth at night. Most of the time, if you are not sleeping with someone else, you will not know that you are grinding. The tip-off is that you wake in the morning with pain in your jaw, face or neck.
Much of the time, people who are suffering from TMJ disorder have developed the condition due to night grinding. Of course some patients grind or clench their teeth during the day as well. To stop grinding and clenching, Dr. Yamaguchi can fit you with an oral appliance that will prevent your teeth from meeting.
Vivera retainers are custom-fit to your mouth because they are made from impressions of your teeth. They are lined with thermoplastic for a comfortable fit, and will ease your discomfort and protect your teeth from further damage. Vivera retainers are also used to prevent your teeth from slipping back into misalignment following orthodontic treatment.
Often, patients are confused as to the distinction between TMJ and TMD. It is simply terminology. We could go into technicalities, and tell you that TMJ means “temporomandibular joint” and TMD is “temporomandibular joint disorder,” but the fact is that most people – even dentists – use the terms interchangeably.
Of course when you are in pain, the last thing you care about is terminology – you just want the pain to stop. The first step is to have a TMD assessment done. Some patients find the examination painful, so it is best done by a dentist with small hands, like Dr. Yamaguchi. Once she determines that the cause of your discomfort is indeed TMJ, she can recommend a course of treatment. This could involve the use of a guard splint, which is an oral appliance that is fitted to your upper or lower teeth in order to facilitate pain-free jaw movement. Other TMD treatments could include the use of a night guard, orthodontic therapy, or, in rare cases, surgery.
Often, people fear dental treatment – the drill, the needle and so on. Today, though, there are many other procedures that can take the pain, fear and discomfort out of dental treatment. One such treatment is laser dentistry. With laser dentistry, Dr. Yamaguchi can often remove small decayed areas and fill teeth without the need for any anesthetic or drilling. Even with more severe decay, the use of the drill can be minimized.
Periodontal therapy has also come a long way thanks to laser dentistry. When plaque develops in your gum area, bacteria begins to set up residence in pockets between your teeth and gums. If the condition goes untreated, gum tissue deteriorates and exposes the tooth roots. In the past, the only means of correcting the condition involved scaling and root planing. However, with laser dentistry and an early diagnosis, the need for such treatments can be minimized or even sometimes eliminated.
Perhaps you wake repeatedly in the night, snoring or gasping for breath. You can’t breathe, and you wonder if you’re ever going to be able to breathe again. This is sleep apnea. Fortunately, treatments are available from Dr. Yamaguchi. Much of the time, all that is needed is for you to be fitted with an oral appliance or mandibular device. These work to stop obstructions, so you will be able to breathe properly through the night.
In rare instances, sometimes the only solution for sleep apnea is surgery, but by far the majority of cases respond to the use of an oral appliance. When you are able to breathe without your throat closing up, the snoring stops, you no longer wake up feeling frightened and stressed, and you and your partner both get the good night’s rest you deserve so you can go about your day without feeling exhausted.
Sometimes, people are frightened by the term “oral surgery.” The fact is, oral surgery really is not all that scary. Oral surgery is simply any dental procedure that requires the dentist to cut into your mouth. Something as simple as a routine extraction is oral surgery. Other types of oral surgery could include root canal treatment, wisdom tooth extraction, or bone grafting. Bone grafting is sometimes done when a patient does not have sufficient bone in the jaw to allow dental implants to be placed. Bone is removed from another area, and grafted into the jawbone. Then, once the new bone growth has properly developed, the implants can be installed.
Most dental surgeries are easily done using only a local anesthetic, although at Dental Arts and Wellness, we do have a dental anesthesiologist on staff for those occasions when general anesthesia is the better option for the patient.
Most of the time, what people fear most about trips to the dentist is the drill and the needle. The reality is that your dentist can provide injections that are painless. With modern dentistry techniques, you do not have to be afraid.
Dr. Yamaguchi uses a revolutionary new method for delivering anesthetic to the patient before dental treatment begins. That pinching feeling you are accustomed to when the dentist uses the needle to administer the anesthetic is greatly reduced. This is just another way that Dr. Yamaguchi puts your comfort first so that your visit to Dental Arts and Wellness can be as stress-free as possible.
With the sedation dentistry options available to you from Dr. Yamaguchi, you can be assured of feeling calm and comfortable while being treated. We offer conscious sedation, which is appropriate for most treatments. When necessary, our dental anesthesiologist can administer a general anesthetic. If you are dental-phobic, ask about our sedation options. Click here to learn more.
At Dental Arts and Wellness, we are concerned with the whole patient, not just the mouth and teeth. We take a holistic approach to dental health, and you can rely on Dr. Yamaguchi to take the holistic approach that you prefer. We also practice bioesthetic dentistry (sometimes also referred to as “green” dentistry). Click here to learn more.
